How does block salt differ to normal table salt?

Initially water softener salt was only available in huge bags of loose salt granules that were heavy, difficult to store and handle and made a lot of mess.
When block salt was invented it revolutionised the industry as it weighs a lot less than granular salt, making it easier to store, handle and manage with no chance of spillage. The salt is compacted into a block and is very dense. This means that water softeners themselves can be small and need refilling less often.

Today’s block salt even has indents that can be used as handles making it a lot easier to manage and place into your water softener.
